This is a unique web site containing value added user-friendly data and analysis about the Indian economy developed for the benefit of users of the Statistical Outline of India (SOI).

The site has been developed to fulfill the need for regular updation of economic data and information. The site is designed to meet the broad requirements of corporate executives, investors, researchers etc. The site provides the following:

Latest data about different sectors of the Indian economy in a user-friendly format under India Update. Quick reaction and brief analysis of the major economic events such as the Union Budget, RBI Credit Policies and any others under Event Based Notes. An archival of economic policies of the Government under  Economic Policy Update.

Industry Overviews provides broad overview of the emerging industries in India having great investment potential.

City Profile deals with the broad socio-economic profiles of major cities and offers inter-city comparisons.

WTO introduces the new global trade regime under the framework of World Trade Organization and its implications for Indian industry.

Note: These products will be rolled out in a phased manner. Currently, only India Update, WTO, City Profiles and Economic Policy Update are on offer.

The site has been developed by a group of professionals in the Tata group- one of the largest business conglomerates of India. The Department of Economics and Statistics (DES), Tata Services Ltd. is the content provider while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Asia's largest software company, looks after the technical aspects of the site.

About the Department of Economics and Statistics (DES):

The DES was established in 1939 as a result of the late Mr. Tata's vision and foresight, with an aim to undertake corporate economic research in an era when the corporate sector was yet to become aware of its benefits. In its illustrious history of more than six decades DES has been responsible for formulating some of the pioneering works of national importance and great significance like the famous 1944 Bombay Plan, various Memoranda to the Ministries of the Government of India, Special Task Force Committee Reports etc. Besides, it is also involved in the strategic planning process of various Group companies and provides proactive research to the companies on their respective sectors.

Another important activity of the DES is the publication of the Statistical Outline of India, popularly known as the SOI. It is a unique publication encapsulating the statistical profile of the Indian economy in a meticulous and user-friendly manner available in printed and CD versions.

DES is also the WTO Cell of the Tata Group and has done pioneering work in terms of conducting WTO awareness programmes. It has also developed an indigenously structured process of conducting company level WTO Audits to help companies assess their WTO preparedness.

Collective Work Experience- The DES brings to the table over 100 man-years of collective professional experience ranging from Industry to research spread among the current group of professionals, spanning a wide range of Industries/Sectors, covering a broad spectrum of activities

Information Base- Knowledge Center & Information Management is managed by a Senior Information Executive with 15 years experience in Information Management. The Knowledge Center is a Group resource whose services are frequently availed of by the Group Chairman's office, the Group Executives Office (GEO), Group Companies and Company executives/officers. The Center keeps abreast of customer needs through constant interaction and knowledge sharing. It's resources consists of a Library having a very rich stock of books, several national and international data bases, Government Reports, Publications from various international organizations, Special Committee Reports, Journals, Magazines (both Indian & Foreign)

Affiliations- The DES members are actively associated with CII, ASSOCHAM, FICCI, Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industries and several other industry associations. In their professional capacity they have been the members of important technical committees.
